Screen Australia

The challenge

As the Australian Government’s primary funding body for the screen industry, Screen Australia required a website that could effectively serve a diverse audience while meeting strict federal standards. The existing platform struggled with poor mobile performance and slow loading times, creating barriers for users who increasingly accessed the site via mobile devices. Furthermore, the navigation made critical content difficult to find, and the internal team faced a high level of reliance on external providers for routine maintenance and updates.

Our approach

Butterfly proposed a comprehensive redesign built on a custom WordPress theme, providing a secure and high-performing foundation. A strategic focus was placed on accessibility, with the site designed and built to meet WCAG 2.2 Level AA standards, alongside a simplified, contemporary design that aligned with the latest Brand Guidelines. This approach ensured that resources remained clear and accessible to all users, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities.

To solve the challenge of content findability, we utilised a research-driven process including card sorting, tree testing, and information architecture workshops to rebuild the user journey. Technically, we leveraged ElasticPress to enhance search functionality and speed, while a high-end page builder was implemented to grant the Screen Australia team intuitive, independent control over their content management. Performance optimisation techniques, such as image compression and code minification, were applied to guarantee fast loading times and reduced data consumption for mobile users.

What we delivered

  • We delivered a modern, responsive digital ecosystem focused on high performance and ease of use for both external visitors and internal administrators.
  • Custom WordPress theme using the Genesis Framework
  • WCAG 2.2 Level AA accessibility compliance integration
  • ElasticPress high-performance search functionality
  • Mobile-first responsive design for all device breakpoints
  • User-friendly content management system with a visual page builder

The result

The transition to the new platform fundamentally shifted how Screen Australia manages its digital presence. By providing the communications team with an intuitive page builder and comprehensive training, we eliminated the previous bottleneck of relying on external developers for site updates. This internal independence allowed the agency to maintain a simplified, content-rich environment that aligns perfectly with their contemporary brand standards.

From a user perspective, the results were centred on inclusivity and speed. The redesigned information architecture and advanced search capabilities meant that filmmakers and industry stakeholders could find funding and support pages with significantly less friction. With optimised mobile performance and strict adherence to accessibility standards, the new site provides a seamless, high-speed experience for Screen Australia’s diverse audience, ensuring their vital industry resources are available to everyone, on any device.
